Why you should consider outsourcing your IT project to Poland. (Part 2)
So you are considering outsourcing an IT project? The previous blog article in the series discussed the quality of schools in Poland, programming capabilities, and English language proficiency in Poland.
Now, it’s time to discuss a topic which is often avoided, and that is corruption. With an outsourced IT project, a firm’s intellectual property and money are sent abroad. Corruption is the elephant in the room that people do not want to bring up for discussion.
But we should turn our attention to corruption. There’s a non-governmental organization based in Germany , Transparency International, which publishes an annual Corruption Perceptions Index (link) which ranks all countries by the level of perceived corruption in the public sector. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Denmark and New Zealand are the least corrupt while S. Sudan, N. Korea, and Somalia are at the bottom of the list.
If you’ve spent time in corrupt countries as I have, taking the Cockroach Theory from the business space and applying it to corruption’s effect on doing business is quite descriptive. The Cockroach Theory suggests that when a company releases bad news, more bad news will follow as there is never just one cockroach. Application of the Cockroach Theory to corruption suggests that if the public sector is corrupt, the judiciary, financial system, and business sector will be as well. These are the sectors which are of importance to a firm outsourcing work.
One of the most import aspects of management practice is to manage risk. India, Russia, and the Ukraine are countries that are commonly considered top choices for outsourcing IT work. India ranks 79th and Russia and Ukraine are tied at 131st for corruption according to Transparency International. In comparison, Poland comes in at a rather pristine 29th!
When choosing a firm to outsource IT projects, or any project for that matter, don’t forget to consider how corruption affects risk. Yet another reason outsourcing your IT project to Poland is the right choice!
